Frankadua Baptist Primary School in rural Ghana
Donation protected
We recently had the great opportunity to volunteer as teachers in a primary school in rural Frankadua, Ghana. The children we worked with were amazing. 6-16-year-olds came to school each day with smiles on their faces, endless hugs, and enthusiasm about almost everything.
However, we were shocked and sad to see how low the resources were in this government-funded school. Kids had to share pencils to do their work. In notebooks, every last blank space was critical. There were no books or textbooks at all. We taught reading to classes of 40 sharing only 15 story books from the volunteer house across multiple schools in the village. Many of the teenagers could not read nor could they make progress without introductory reading materials. There was no electricity in the school and we taught lessons about "the internet" using only drawings on chalk boards.
Still, these kids kept striving. They whispered in our ears about how much they loved reading and wanted to learn so much more.
Donations from this GoFundMe will be used to purchase school supplies and books. Reaching our goal will provide all 250 kids in the school with pens, pencils, notebooks, exercise books, textbooks, early reading books, and chapter books. If we are fortunate enough to raise more than our goal, these funds will allow us to collaborate with the school's Head Master to support additional needs over time. For example, moving to whiteboards from chalkboards which are difficult to read. Or helping to send the kids on field trips to a famous bridge that is only 20 minutes away yet none of the kids had ever been there.
