Climbing Ben Nevis for Billy

Some people come into your life and leave an impression that lasts forever. Eliot Boland, better known as Billy, was one of those people.

Billy was the kind of man who could light up any room. He was loyal, funny, caring, and had a way of making everyone feel like an old friend. He was loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, and his strength inspired so many throughout his life.

In November 2020, Billy was diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma, a slow-growing cancer that was first discovered in the lymph nodes on the right side of his neck. What began as a diagnosis soon became a relentless battle as the disease spread throughout his body—to his kidneys, stomach, chest, shoulder, and eventually both hips, where massive tumours caused devastating fractures. The cancer later spread to his bones and, in the end, to his brain.

Over the next five and a half years, Billy faced round after round of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and even specialist treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Despite every effort and every ounce of determination, the cancer never completely disappeared. Billy never got the chance to experience the moment every cancer patient dreams of—to Ring That Bell and celebrate being in remission. That was something he desperately wanted, and one of the hardest parts of his journey.

Yet through it all, he never stopped being Billy. He faced every setback with courage, humour, and a fighting spirit that never gave in. He was, and always will be, a true warrior.

To honour his memory, I will be driving to Scotland and climbing Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK. Every mile travelled and every step climbed will be for Billy and for the incredible fight he never chose but faced with unbelievable bravery.

The money raised will either go towards creating another memorial in Billy's hometown—a place where friends and family can remember the amazing man he was—or it will be given to his parents so they can donate it to a charity of their choosing in his memory, helping others who are facing their own battles with cancer.
