I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2001.  For many years, the disease had progressed slowly and as each new problem came up. I was able to adapt.  But the progression was worsened the last year.  I fall down a lot more than I used to.  With the pronounced weakness in my legs due to the MS, I can no longer get back up on my own and must call the fire department rescue squad to come out and get me back up on my feet.  The ‘I’ve fallen and I can’t get up’ commercials take on a whole new meaning when you yourself have fallen and really can’t get up.  The cost for having these men come out and lift me up is expensive.  Something I cannot afford.  I’m finding it harder every day to just get up from a chair, needing to make multiple attempts before I can successfully get up.
They have made many breakthroughs in helping to ease the symptoms of MS.  I was fortunate enough to get in a plasmapheresis program for a while.  But, after about a year, my arteries finally said no more.  The doctors could no longer get the IV’s started and they had to remove me from the program.
The next step was a new medication.  Its only function was to assist in walking.  It was to make your gait stronger and possibly even make the need for a walker non-existent.  I was more than willing to give this new medication a try.  After about a month, and several calls to the fire department, I was starting to realize that the medication that was to help me walk better was making me lightheaded, to the point I was fainting, and of course falling.  The doctors promptly removed me from that one.
I need a ramp to be able to walk in and out of the house. I had several companies come in to give me estimates on the cost to install a ramp.   The estimates I received were running anywhere from 5000.00 to 10000.00 for a plain and simple ramp.  But, I really need one so that I can get in for my scheduled doctor appointments.
My fiance' purchased the home we are living in several years ago when I was working a full-time job.  Now that I can no longer work, the burden of the home, and care for me, him and his son all fall to his salary. Living with a single salary for 3 of us is not an easy thing to do.
I have checked in with the National MS Society.  The said there is a possibility that they can help with the cost of the ramp, but they will be capped out at 1400.00.  I have also checked within the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America for some type of assistance with the ramp, butt hey cannot help. I  have contacted Revitalize, Habitat for Humanity, my insurance company, several state and federal disability programs that assist with home modifications.
I have exhausted every avenue so far in attempts to find funding for a ramp. GoFundMe is my last hope to be able to get the needed funds for a ramp so I can get back to my doctors for the MS, diabetes and other medical issues I have.
