A Voice For Isabel
Donation protected
Isabel will be celebrating her 26th birthday on May 6th, and in all her years she has been trapped in silence, never able to have a true voice of her own. Isabel is affected by a rare genetic disorder called Rett Syndrome that leaves her cognitively functional, but physically incapable of speech. For years we have explored different options to help Isabel communicate, but have been unsuccessful due to her physical limitations. Recently we discovered the NuEye technology that uses eye movement to maneuver through a program that will allow Isabel to make commands, requests, and let us know what she is thinking and feeling for the first time ever!
Communication devices are expensive and can range upwards of $20,000. After the age of 21, insurance WILL NOT COVER any communication device, which leaves families paying for these crucial and life changing tools out of pocket.
We have found a communication system made specifically for girls with Rett Syndrome that we originally thought would cost around $8,000, but will actually cost around $16,000 for the complete system - both the computer and the eye camera. When Isabel tried this system out last year during a speech therapy session, she flew through the program and proudly spelled out, “My name is Isy,” over and over again!
This device would radically change the quality of Isabel’s life and the kind of care we can give her. To speak to our sweet Isabel would be the most amazing gift for her and for our family.
We would appreciate any donation or help
you can spare in order to give our angel this most precious gift in celebration of her birthday. We cannot thank you enough for helping us find her voice at last!
*Edit to add that Judith Dwyer, Isabel’s mother and caregiver, is the benefactor of this fundraiser as she is in charge of Isabel’s medical affairs.
