Help Vietnam Veteran Dan Fight Prostate Cancer & Keep Home

This is my fight: I’m Dan, a Vietnam veteran battling prostate cancer and I need your help to stay in the home I defended.
My Story :
My name is Dan Johnson. I grew up in a small town in Florida, the son of a factory worker and a schoolteacher. They taught me about hard work, honor, and community. When I turned 18 in 1968, I felt the call to serve. I joined the U.S. Air Force without second thought because that’s what we did for each other.

I’m a Vietnam veteran, and I look back on those days with pride: the long nights flying missions, tending to wounded airmen, and coming home weary but determined to build a good life. When I returned, I married my sweetheart, raised kids, and built a house filled with memories a house I hoped would stand as a monument to peace and stability.
Prostate Cancer :
Last winter, I began feeling tired worn-out in a way I couldn’t shake. I thought age was catching up with me. But the diagnosis was anything but ordinary: prostate cancer aggressive, deep-rooted, and life-threatening.
Those words hit harder than any firefight overseas. Instead of the roar of aircraft, I now hear hospital monitors. Clean white walls have replaced the chaos of war zones. The scans, biopsies, chemotherapy, and radiation they leave me drained and uncertain.

I’ve fought my whole life. But this is different. My body is failing in ways I can’t control. And each treatment brings bills I hadn’t planned for. While cancer weakens me, the fear of losing my house weighs heaviest. I told my daughter once: “I can fight anything but losing the house I built scares me more than cancer.”

The Financial Battleground :
Here’s what we’re up against
- I still owe $100,000 on the mortgage of this home my sanctuary.
- Prostate cancer treatment costs co-pays, medication, scans are stacking up fast.
- With treatments keeping me out of work, utilities, food, and medicine are slipping out of reach.
Believe me, it hurts to ask for help. But I need to. And every dollar is more than numbers it’s stability.
- $25: gas and groceries
- $100: radiation co-pay
- $500: one mortgage payment
Each gift means I stay another month in the place I built with my own hands, surrounded by family photos and quiet mornings. It’s more than shelter it’s my dignity.
Family & Community Support :

My daughter, Anna, says: “Dad always put others first. Now he’s asking for help. That’s hard for him.”
Neighbors check in weekly bringing casseroles, telling stories of his service, and standing by him at his bedside. Local VFW members gather here, honoring his Vietnam veteran legacy and praying for his health.
These acts of kindness matter more than money they remind me I’m not alone. They remind me what true community looks like. And as I fight this cancer, they lift my spirit every day.

Why Now Matters :
Time is slipping away. The cancer doesn’t wait and neither does the mortgage. Without immediate help, America’s battle-tested sons shouldn’t have to choose between treatment and eviction.
I fought for my country. Now I’m fighting for my home and for a fair chance at life. It’s more than bricks and beams it’s the life I built, the life I’ve earned.
Everything is out in the open on GoFundMe:
- Medical bills, receipts, updates.
- My eldest updates donors on my progress.
- Every dollar is tracked, every thank-you noted.
So far, 10 people have rallied with $200 in donations. It means the world but it’s just the beginning.
This is my plea to you:
- Donate today even $25 helps.
- Share my story on Facebook, Instagram, or with a friend. Use #VietnamVeteran, #ProstateCancer, #HelpDan.
- Send encouragement a note, prayer, or hello. They help more than you know.
- Follow updates and watch how community support changes this veteran’s life.
I served so others could live in safety. Now, your support helps me live with dignity and hope.
A Soldier’s Thanks :
