A Van for Katie: Ensuring Mobility and Stability

Update: We were able to borrow the money to get the van and the difference it makes for me is amazing. We are still raising funds as we have yet to figure out how to repay the loan, but we do have the van now in our possession. Thank you so much to each of you who have donated. We appreciate you so much.

My name is Katie, and I’m raising funds to help make a life-changing transition: securing a wheelchair-accessible van so I can continue living, working, and caring for my family with independence and dignity.

For more than 30 years, I’ve lived with a neurological condition (possible multiple sclerosis, atypical migraines, and dyskinesia) that affects my ability to walk and causes severe fatigue and other challenging symptoms. Over the past year, those symptoms have progressed significantly. We’ve had to install a ramp and stair lift in our home, and I now rely on a wheelchair for mobility.

I work as the Finance Director for the City of McMinnville, a role I care deeply about. Beginning this January, my job now requires me to be in the office three days a week, with an hour-long commute and travel between multiple locations during the day. I want to keep working — not only because I love what I do, but because it’s essential for supporting my family.

Right now, my wheelchair is transported on a lift attached to the back of my car. As my condition worsens, loading and unloading it has become increasingly difficult and physically exhausting. I’m also unable to use the customized wheelchair my insurance provided because it’s too heavy for the lift. Each workday takes a toll that grows heavier over time.

A wheelchair-accessible van would be truly transformative. It would allow me to drive directly, safely, and independently — conserving my energy, reducing physical strain, and making it possible for me to continue working and providing for my family. I am over 50 and have a 12-year-old son at home, and maintaining stability and independence for him means everything to me.

The funds raised will go toward the down payment on a wheelchair-accessible van, helping make this necessary transition possible. Every donation, no matter the size, brings me closer to mobility, independence, and the ability to keep moving forward. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser is just as meaningful.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for being part of this journey with me. Your support truly makes a difference ❤️.
