At the age of 13 months Doug suffered a rare viral illness which attacked the part of his brain controlling his motor skills. As a result of this illness, he lost his mobility and was left with the condition of spastic quadraparesis and cerebral palsy.
From an early age, Doug has depended upon adaptive equipment to live his life . As an adult, he now requires the use of a power wheelchair for his mobility, an IPad to communicate and a handicapped equipped van for transportation.
Doug loves to be as independent as possible. He has worked very hard all of his life to be “self-sufficient” and a trailblazer for those living with a disability. Currently, Doug lives in his own apartment with the assistance of community supports, neighbors, friends and family. He works part time and likes to attend community events, when possible.
For Doug to remain independent, he needs your help. His current modified van is 13 years old and is unsafe to drive and beyond repair. Please help us raise funds so that Doug can have a safe handicapped equipped van to provide him with transportation to work, the doctor, the hospital and church; as well as, to connect him to family, friends and community.
Our goal is to purchase a previously owned, reliable van which costs $41,000.00
As a mother, it means so much to me to be able to see my son have the opportunity to participate as fully in life as possible and to remain independent. I am grateful for your help and support and thank you from the bottom of my heart for your donation.
