“A Twist of Fate, a Dog Named Freyja, and a Second Chance”

Those who know me know I don’t ask for help lightly—and especially not like this. In a world where it feels like everyone needs something, I understand how easy it is to scroll past. But what if this is that one time you can and will make a dramatic difference in one small life?

Just a couple of weeks ago, here in Belize, we rescued a little dog now named Loki—a beautiful soul who had been caught up in a very precarious situation! But he was brave and willing to trust again. We thought we had our hands full with one unexpected rescue.

Then, as if the universe had a flair for dramatic timing (or was borrowing from a Lemony Snicket novel), another dog appeared—emerging from the quiet, undeveloped land around Caribbean Way in Placencia.

She was cautious, hungry, and heartbreakingly alone. Mom (the GOAT nurse) spent days slowly gaining her trust—bringing food, sitting nearby, letting her know she was safe. When she finally let us close enough to help her, we named her Freyja—after the Norse goddess of love and beauty—because despite everything she had endured, her eyes still held grace, vulnerability, and a quiet kind of strength.

Unfortunately our joy quickly turned to heartbreak when we found out, immediately after her rescue, that Freyja has TVT (transmissible venereal tumor)—a very serious cancer that is tragically common among stray and not neutered dogs in Belize. Left untreated, it’s painful and ultimately fatal.

We also found out that with very targeted chemotherapy, she has a very strong chance of recovery and a full life ahead.….hopefully with us and Loki if she’ll have us!

That’s where I need your help.

We’re raising $1500 to cover:

• Veterinary consultations and lab work

• Chemotherapy treatments

• Medication and follow-up care

If we’re able to raise more than Freyja needs, any extra funds will go toward helping other animals in our area who are in crisis—and there are so many on this ever growing peninsula community.

The odds of Freyja showing up here—sick and alone—just after we rescued Loki feel like more than coincidence. It feels like she found us for a reason. And we believe we found her for one too.
