A trip to see our terminally ill mother
Donation protected
My younger sister and I lost our father when we were 3 years old and 6 months old, respectively. And now, almost 30 years later, my mother is battling a terminal degenerative disease called Spinocerebellar Ataxia #3 and Machado Joseph's disease. This is a genetic condition that claimed the life of her father, an aunt, and a cousin thus far. Our mother moved from Atlanta to Colorado for a higher altitude and a cooler climate to slow the progression of the disease, which she has had for over 15 years. She has gone from an active, vibrant massage therapist, author, and entrepreneur to being wheel-chair bound, non-verbal, and requiring 24-hour care. But her mind is still sharp and we're able to communicate occasionally by email and Messenger.
My sister and I, plus our 2 daughters were able to visit my mother in 2018 through the Make-a-Wish Foundation. At the time, my mother was in the Hospice Program, but was released a month after our trip. She has really surprised her doctors and has outlived many patients with a similar form of Ataxia.
She will be facing major surgery on April 11. The doctors have told her of the risk of the surgery and that she might not wake up. Our mom has asked to see all of us before her surgery, as both my sister and I had babies in November 2018. I had twin boys and my sister became the mother of her third daughter. My husband and I are unable to pay for airfare to Colorado for both of us and our two older kids, and my sister can't afford the trip for herself, her kids father and her 2 older girls. We're hoping to raise funds by April 6th for airfare for 4 adults and 4 kids with 3 lap seat infants to Denver, plus one night's hotel stay for each family. The expected cost for all of us, plus accommodations is $3000
Please consider donating to help us see our mom before her surgery as it maybe our last time to see her and her first time to see her youngest 3 grandchildren. Any amount would help and be greatly appreciated!
