In the early morning hours of Aug. 19, straight-line winds, the National Weather Service estimated at 70 to 80 mph tore through Wyandotte County, and drove a massive uprooted tree through Mr. Kirk's home of 20 years (pictured above). The roof collapsed on him. He was trapped under the rubble for more than three hours as hail and glass poured in, until a neighbor heard his calls and pulled him out. He survived with deep cuts to his legs, stomach, and back. Firefighters rescued his dog, Beatle.

Mr. Kirk is tougher than his house ever was. He has beaten both throat and thyroid cancer, and though he still battles heart problems, he stays optimistic.

You may have seen his story on the local news coverage:

Two months later, he's made the tough decision to give up one of his two dogs, his house is still split in two under a tarp, with no roof and no power. Mr. Kirk has no insurance. After weeks in shelters and motels, he's now living in an RV a friend parked on his property.

Steven Vega, a KCK native and owner of Northern Star Solutions, saw the damaged house in the rain, came back with volunteers, and tarped the roof (shown above). He has donated his labor ever since and will lead the rebuild at cost. "It's the most extreme I've seen," he told local news. But he can't cover materials alone.

Our goal: rebuild or replace Mr. Kirk's home on his property and get him and Beatle inside before winter.

Your donation pays for materials, permits, and construction costs. Funds go directly to Mr. Kirk’s rebuild through Northern Star Solutions.
