A Tiny Warrior's Fight for a Comfortable Life

My sweet 9-year-old chihuahua, Sheree, a cherished member of my family, has faced extraordinary health challenges with an unwavering spirit. From the moment she came into my life, her playful energy has filled my heart with so much love. But in early 2024, manageable arthritis quickly escalated into something far worse. Her medication stopped working, her wrists weakened, and a mass appeared. The devastating diagnosis was plasma cell cancer and erosive polyarthritis. My energetic Sheree could barely rise from her bed and the year was filled with vet visits and tests, seeking a diagnosis, and healing.

Sheree underwent surgery in May 2024 to remove the cancer from her left wrist but also to fuse her right wrist due to the progressing arthritis. In February 2025, after being declared CANCER-FREE, she had a second surgery to also fuse her left wrist. These surgeries rekindled her spirit and gave her the ability to move about more freely. I was so hopeful that she would return to her energetic and playful self.

However, despite immunosuppressants, Sheree's poor back legs have also now begun to weaken. Physical therapy offers some relief, but the issue persists.

Sadly, despite having pet insurance and a wellness plan, coverage for her surgeries was denied due to what the insurance company deemed “pre-existing conditions,” even though they lead me to believe that the cancer treatment would be covered. They certainly took my premiums though. Sheree's care has cost over $27,000, excluding ongoing medications and blood work. I know it may sound like a lot to spend on a pet but Sheree is my best friend and I truly believed she deserved a comfortable life so I was fully committed to doing everything within my power to ease her pain. Here is a summary of my expenses:

• Pre-Surgery Diagnostics & Consultations (X-rays, bloodwork, oncology/surgery/internal medicine consultations, joint taps, biopsy): $4,000

• First Surgery (Mass Removal, Arthrodesis, Lab Analysis): $8,200

• Post-Surgery Care (X-rays, joint taps, sedation, weekly cast changes): $3,000

• Cancer Treatment (Electrochemotherapy): $1,200

• Physical Therapy (Consultations & Sessions): $1,000

• Second Surgery (Arthrodesis of Left Leg): $8,200

• Post-Second Surgery Care (X-rays, weekly cast changes for 6 weeks): $1,100

• Wheelchair (To support her weakening back legs): $500

At this point, I have exhausted my financial resources, maxing out my credit cards just to provide her with the care she needs. I understand that times are tough for many, so any contribution, no matter how small, would make a world of difference to Sheree and me. I have always been fiercely independent and able to handle anything life threw my way, but like so many others today, I'm barely staying afloat having to contend with Sheree's medical bills on top of my daily life expenses. Your generosity will directly support her ongoing medical expenses, allowing her to live a more comfortable and fulfilling life.
