Charlotte has always had the biggest smiles, but also the craziest meltdowns with the inability to control her emotions. With a severe speech delay at the age of 2 we starting looking for a reason for her challenges. In early 2018 Charlotte was diagnosed with Autism and it all started to make sense to us. We immediately began many different therapies, but we can do more for Charlotte and a therapy dog can help.
All Charlotte wants to do is play with her peers, but it's hard for her... Unable to form sentences well, inability to answer many questions or to read social cues well leaves her on the outskirts of play with friends. But a therapy dog can help her interact with other children by acting as a bridge for play.
Charlotte is one of the happiest little girls we have ever known, but when she is overstimulated her meltdowns can really be challenging and sometimes debilitating to her. Sometimes lasting up to an hour, her meltdowns take away her happiness as she struggles to regain control of her emotions. A therapy dog can help her stay calm and provide comfort when approaching a meltdown.
Many children with Autism wander away or run and Charlotte is no expection...There is nothing scarier when Charlotte runs from her family towards a street, wanders from the house or even worse, the time she got lost in a large library. A therapy dog will be trained to keep Charlotte from running towards the street, wandering from the house and if she ever gets lost... to find her.
A therapy dog will be life changing for Charlotte and her care and medical team agrees. Therapy dogs for Autism have been shown to increase independence, increase vocabulary and provide an overall more calming environment.
The cost of her new companion is not cheap and takes time to train (about 1 year), but it will be worth it: $15,000 for the raising and training of her amazing friend. Our fundraising goal is in 2 phases:
First, to raise the deposit of $2500 that will secure our new family member
by April 30
The, raise the remaining $7500 by Charlottes birthday on September 23, 2019. What a wonderful birthday present for her!
We will be paying the final installment of $5000 once her dog is trained and ready to be brought home next year.
Any amount over that we raise will go to another family that needs the support of a therapy dog but like us, do not have all of the funds. Funds will be given to the lovely people that are providing us with our therapy dog; Assistance Dogs for Autism a division of Highland Canine Training, LLC as a grant to fund another family.
