Cake is a CSULB Senior Capstone Production being produced by a group of passionate and eager students. For some, this is their first major film experience, and for others, this is their last school production. For both, we want to put our full effort into making an incredible production. But we can't do it alone!

With such, we need your support to make our story come to life. Through your help, we can facilitate our child actors, obtain our complex locations, create a visually impactful story, and acquire our essential resources!

STORY: After failing to bake a cake, a grieving mother ventures outside with determination to find the special cake that her husband used to make, ensuring that her daughter's first birthday without her dad isn't defined by grief

THEMES: Cake is a film created to display that grief is something that shapes how we live, even when we’re trying to keep it together for others. It's about a mother, dealing with the loss of her husband, and how she is trying to keep her family's traditions alive for her daughter, all while struggling with her own emotional walls. There is an additional layer of grief introduced through her daughter, Gracie. Displaying how she faces the burden of grief. The story highlights the value of vulnerability and breaking down emotional walls.

MEET OUR CHARACTERS:

MARTHA - Martha is a mother who is deeply grieving the recent loss of her husband, trying to hold it together for her 11-year-old daughter’s birthday. Due to her husband’s recent car accident, she has trouble going outside and avoids the bakery shop he used to work at. Her hyperfocus on being there for her daughter has caused her to look over the emotional walls she has put on herself and her daughter.

GRACIE - Gracie is Martha’s sweet daughter, she is the emotional comfort for her mother. Gracie is burdened with the weight of grief, not being able to express her feelings and struggling to make sense of her father’s death. This has caused her to get into fights with her school bully, Timmy, as well as being congested with her emotions.

TOM - Tom is a family friend. He was a coworker and best friend to Eric, Martha’s recently passed husband. He is gruff but shows kindness beneath the surface.

ERIC - Eric was Martha’s husband and Gracie’s father. He was an outstanding baker, as well as a loving and caring father/husband. Eric was the cook and baker of the family. He created the tradition of baking a special birthday cake from scratch during one’s birthday. He is greatly missed by all those who knew him.
