“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” —Nelson Mandela
This is Adiel. When I met him he was a shy 6-year-old who loved airplanes and pizza. Today he is ready to enter his Senior Year of High School as a top math and science student in West Africa. Unfortunately, his mother, who I have known since I first started a pregnancy & literacy program in Liberia, is unemployed and unable to afford the $3,500 tuition for his final year of school. Liberia, like many African nations, has no public education.
It is unbearable to think that a High School Diploma will be denied to this talented, hardworking student because of his country’s shrinking economy – especially when I know Liberia’s future depends on educated minds like his.
I wish I could afford to fund Adiel’s tuition on my own; but, I can’t. Please help if you can, no matter how small – and one day I hope to share his graduation photograph.
Personally, working in developing countries has been life-changing. But realizing that my colleague’s hard-won college degree doesn’t guarantee she’ll be able to ensure her son’s High School Diploma has left me heartbroken – and that much more committed to public education.
