As many of you will know, Angela Carver recently lost her battle with sarcoma cancer, leaving me without my precious Mum and David without his loving wife of 36 years.
Mum fought a brave, hard battle with cancer and like most, towards the end, was very reliant on a lot of medication to help reduce some of the pain she was constantly suffering. As her illness progressed, she became unable to swallow her medication, therefore, something else was needed.
We were very fortunate that Marie Curie were able to lend us a automatic syringe driver. A syringe driver is a small battery-powered pump that delivers medication at a constant rate through a small plastic tube under the skin. This meant when the nurse came each morning, she was able to refill the syringe with enough Morphine to last for 24 hours. This was then constantly administrated into my Mum enabling her pain to be a reduced throughout the day and night.
The alternative to this would have meant my Mum would have needed to be in hospitalised, at the most important time towards the end of her life. Thankfully because of the syringe driver, she was able to remain at home, where she could spend precious time with the people who loved her most.
We were very fortunate to have the syringe driver from Marie Curie because the growing demand is increasing faster than the number of units they have available. In fact, the one we secured for my Mum was one of the last two available at that time and thankfully we got it when we did, but there is not enough to go around.
Knowing how important syringe drivers are and seeing first hand the benefits they bring for end of life care and their families, we know how essential it is to have more. Therefore, in the memory of my Mum, Angela Carver, David and I would like to raise £2,500 for Marie Curie to purchase another machine and enable others to benefit as much as we did.
David and I would really appreciate any help you could give in donating towards our £2,500 target and enabling us to support Marie Curie who in turn, will be able to help so many others.
Many thanks
Lydia & David
