In 1981, I lost my son shortly after birth due to complications from being born prematurely. At the time, medical knowledge was limited, and I was also fighting for my own life. I was told my son would be laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery in the Mayo babies plot, but when I went to visit, I was told he wasn’t there. For years, neither the cemetery nor Mayo Clinic could tell me where my son’s remains were.
This year, after decades of searching, a compassionate woman at Mayo dedicated months to helping me. Thanks to her persistence, we finally discovered that my son was indeed at Oakwood Cemetery, in Section 13. He had been cremated with other infants, and for years, there were no records or names attached to their resting place.
Now, for the first time, I have proof of where my son is. Even more incredibly, Mayo Clinic has made an exception to allow me to place a stone or marker at his resting place—something that’s never been allowed before. I am the only parent given this chance, and it means the world to me.
Having a stone will finally verify my son’s existence and give me an exact spot to visit him, honor his memory, and find some peace. I am asking for help to cover the cost of the stone, installation, and flowers, as I am responsible for all expenses. Any support you can give will help me give my son the recognition he deserves and bring comfort after so many years of searching.
Thank you for reading my story and for any help you can offer.
