We are a group of neighbours from Edinburgh’s West End, brought together by a very special cat—Hugo.

Who was Hugo?

Hugo was an Arabian Mau, was adopted by his owner Jane on the streets of Doha. When the family returned to Scotland, Hugo came with them. From 2020 to 2023, Hugo decided that our West End streets were his second home.
Each day, he wandered through William Street and the surrounding lanes—visiting shopkeepers, offices, and local homes. He had his favourite spots for naps, meals, and shelter, and many residents and businesses welcomed him in, letting him curl up for the night.

It didn’t take long before Hugo became a familiar face in the neighbourhood. Photos and stories of his wanderings soon appeared on Facebook and Instagram, and many residents and businesses shared their encounters with him. Wherever he went, Hugo made an impression—whether stopping by a shop, settling in for a nap, or simply watching the world go by. As a desert cat, he could be a little territorial at times and wasn’t especially fond of dogs, but that was simply part of his character. Over time, he became part of the life and character of our streets, and a talking point that connected neighbours across the West End.

A tragic loss

In April 2023, tragedy struck. Hugo was hit by a vehicle . The driver didn’t stop. Though a kind neighbour rushed him to the vet, his injuries were too severe, and he was put to sleep.

His sudden loss shocked the community. Hugo was part of the West End’s daily life. His death also inspired something bigger: a campaign to change the law so that drivers must stop and report when they hit a cat. His story was covered across the national media, including BBC, The Times, The Scotsman, The National, and Edinburgh Evening News.

We want to honour Hugo’s life and the community spirit he inspired with a bronze statue on William Street, crafted by renowned sculptor Alan Beattie Herriot. This won’t just be a memorial to a famous cat—it will be a symbol of our neighbourhood’s compassion, unity, and determination to create change.

Your donation will help fund:
The creation and installation of the bronze statue
A commemorative plaque sharing Hugo’s story
A future campaign calling on the government to introduce a change in the law.

Every pound brings us closer to keeping Hugo's spirit alive in the heart of the West End.
Please donate and share to help make Hugo’s legacy a reality. Thank you.
