On September 8th at 6:30 PM, I placed a call to my folks to ensure they had evacuated due to the Bear Fire (North Complex West Zone Fire). However, they had not received any news or communication to evacuate. As updates grew on my end, I persistently phoned them to check their status. Around 9:30 PM, they had still not been told to evacuate. At this point, the fire had seemingly reached the Enterprise Bridge, only 1 mile from my parents home, and they were now able to see it from their front porch. Scrambling to gather essential and sentimental items, they left with only the clothes on their back. As they hurried down Lumpkin Road, they described the flames encroaching their vehicle as they tried to escape the fire, alongside their helpless neighbors.
I have been fortunate enough to open my home to them temporarily during evacuation; but on September 17th, they received official confirmation that their home, shop, and all they own was burned to the ground.
Starting over is going to be difficult, challenging and tough. Prayers and thoughts are needed most, but they can't do this alone either. If you are able to donate even the smallest amount, it would mean the world to them, and me. They do not need much to start off with, but every bit counts. More than ever we need to come together during these difficult times. Many families and lives have been affected by this tragedy, but I know there is still so much good out there.
I am so very lucky that they were able to get out in time, and with all of their animals. I cannot imagine the alternative outcome had I not called them that evening.
