A Start for Jamie

A START FOR JAMIE

This page is here to try and give our wonderful nephew Jamie Milligan a start in life.  Jamie is 20, and from leaving school has worked hard to secure employment, while caring for his mum Lee, who has battled with cancer for the last few years.

In 2009, tragically Jamie lost his dad to suicide.  Jamie was 11 at the time.  In 2014, his mum suffered her first set back when she had a brain aneurysm.  Two years later, they suffered yet again, when Lee was diagnosed with Stage 4 Bowel Cancer, and in the last few weeks, they received the devastating news that the cancer had moved to her brain.  Lee is now receiving palliative care in Strathcarron Hospice.

While trying to support his mum in hospital in the last few weeks, Jamie himself fell unwell.  With gravely low levels of haemoglobin, his Doctors established that the root cause was Crohn's disease.

In the next few weeks and months, Jamie, while coming to terms with his own health issues, stands to lose nearly everything that gave him the very foundations of a stable life.  His mum, his house, his car and all the securities that a young man of 20 would normally have.

He will not want for love - he has a wonderful girlfriend Kirsten, and an Uncle, Aunty, Gran and Grandpa from his dad's side, plus an amazing Aunty on his mum’s side.  We will be able to support him through the dark times he faces and give him the safety of a home.  What we don't have is the financial resources to help bury his mum and means that could set him up for a better start to his adult life.

That's why we are reaching out for your support.  Lots of Lee's friends, our colleagues and friends, plus others who hear this heart breaking story have asked how they can help Jamie.  Sadly, none of us can change the situation, or the outcome.  However, we can give Jamie something that could help pay for the funeral, put a deposit on a flat, or maybe buy a wee car for him to get about.

We've been in touch with a number of Government bodies, predominantly the department of work and pensions. The sad indictment of the country we live in and the administration of that country, is that Jamie is not eligible for any financial assistance.........

Is there support to pay for a funeral?  No, Jamie is doing an apprenticeship, does not claim benefits, so cannot tap into any social fund.

Could he get assistance to rent a property?  No, again, because he's trying to better himself doing an apprenticeship, there's no benefits he is eligible for.  He can't afford a property on an apprentice wage, so without the support of family, he'd be homeless and of no concern to the government.

The same responses come from every government body we turn to.  So it's down to us (and Jamie), to try our best and set him up for a future.

Jamie's aspiration is to see his mum laid to rest according to her wishes and spend as much time with her as he can in the coming weeks.  After that, he hopes to finish his apprenticeship, save for a flat in Glasgow, get a job and a runaround car if he can.  If we can raise £5k, or more, then this would help a truly inspirational young man get a break in  a life that most 20 year olds will never have had to cope with.

Your support, however large or small, and whoever you are, would be massively appreciated.  You will have made a difference for a wonderful young man who deserves every chance he can get in life.

Thank you.

Tony (Jamie's Uncle)
