“Andy Weyant Not Just another guy!”
Help us Fund the New Van this exceptional man needs to survive.
Andy grew up in Blooming Grove Orange Co. New York, a decorated cross country and track star, with dreams of a bright future. But Andy had a bad day. April 12th 1985 was the day his God given physical abilities were silenced. 15 year old Andy on an adventure with friends in a home they should not have been in, was then suddenly surprised by an unsuspecting adult. He felt cornered and made a rash and fateful decision to jump out a 12 foot high window to escape. His neck was broken. This fall resulted in a C4 C5 spinal cord injury, which left him now to live with quadriplegia.
One day of “let’s be kids”! Doing something you shouldn’t. Since that fatal day, at that tender age of 15, he rehabbed for a year. What seems amazing, is he proceeded to graduate with his high school class of 1987. Who does That?
With severe medical issues and extreme physical challenges, he then received his degree from Marist College in 2006. With all his school studies and the deeper hard earned knowledge, he dedicated himself to helping others improve their quality of life.
He serves on the Board of Directors for Independent Home Care in Newburgh N.Y. Weyant is also a significant part of A volunteer Amateur radio group….
Orange County ARES/RACES.
I know Andy through our church. He has touched my heart and soul with his huge Spirit. All I will say for now is , Andy is an example of Humility and Kindness.
Andy did not allow this tragic accident to define him. The tenacity, courage and strength he possessed as a 15 year old, under those extreme circumstances, defines this man so much better. That very same strength of character is what makes him who he is today. Somebody who lives to give. Being around him can only be a blessing.
While Andy is an exceptional man, he is also one with exceptional needs.
The only way he can survive and thrive, is if he is able to be transported by a specially modified wheelchair accessible Van. Not only for the needed medical attention but to have his life go on as he has become accustom to. He is an avid church attendant and desires to be outdoors whenever possible. He is dependent on drivers but they are fearful of their own safety in his current vehicle. After years of use it has become corroded with rust in the floorboards and all through the break lines. It currently lost power steering just today. Andy is in No Way able to afford the $80,000 a specialized new Van would cost. With the myriad of “hidden costs”,of having an extreme physical disability, such as, Aides for assistance or health care providers and all costs involved in having a suitable wheelchair and the maintenance... etc.
Insurance just doesn’t cover these things. Then trying to maneuver through the systems red tape to get help, is simply exhausting and impossible. You have to meet the need most times before all the paperwork is done and approved and sent into effect.
Andy’s strength of character needs to be celebrated. He is so worthy of respect and admiration. Andy never screams for Anything. Can we all rally and scream for him?
Please let us, the more fortunate, acknowledge this person as he truly deserves.
Help us help him.
