A Sleepover...with Sharks!

About the trip: When you think of spring break, what comes to mind? Perhaps palm trees, sand, or sunscreen. While Cabo isn’t an option for these 11 year-olds from the Bronx, we think we’ve found something better. The National Aquarium, located in Baltimore, MD, offers a sleepover during which students can get up close and personal with the ocean’s fiercest predator. The kids will not only learn about sharks and their way of life, but will discover how crucial they are to the ocean’s health and the survival of other species. The night will even include a personal tour of the aquarium and a behind the scenes look at the care and keeping of the sharks.

The goal of this trip is to develop within our students a deep love of the ocean and a concern for its well-being, as well as an appreciation of the vital role that aquariums play in its preservation. A night at the museum would be the perfect ending to our three-day exploration of aquatic life in Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay, Washington D.C., and Baltimore. It is our hope that the students will return to New York with an eagerness to learn about and a concern for the bodies of water  that surround the Bronx .

Each ticket costs $115 and includes, a private tour of the aquarium, educational programming, dinner & breakfast, lodging, and admission the next day.

About our class: Although they live just a few miles from the Atlantic, most of these 5th graders have never been swimming in the ocean. Their daily life consists primarily of school, family, squash, and academic prep at the CitySquash office. While they love school, squash, and time with friends, they also jump on any opportunity to try something new.

About CitySquash: CitySquash is a nonprofit after-school program based in the Bronx & Brooklyn. The organization helps motivated and excited kids and teens fulfill their academic and athletic potential through squash practices, academic enrichment, and cultural exposure.
