Hi friends,
My name is Sherry and you may know me as a bartender, server, or single mom. You may or may not know I also care for my little sister Teri. I dont talk about her enough but I should. She is awesome. She was born with a cancer called Retinoblastoma and she lost vision in one eye at a super young age and the visuon in her other eye continues to deterioate. Some combination of genetics, radiation in the 80s, life experiences etc have also made both mental development and overall mental health a struggle for her. Our mom passed when she was 12 and our dad passed when she was 25. Our parents had both had terminal illness before thier death so its fair to say I've been overseeing Teris care since I was 16 yrs old. She strived to be independent and at times lived on her own under my supervision but she's been with me and my children in our home for about 15 yrs now. She is an amazing aunt to my children and my biggest supporter in all of ours and my life struggles.
This past week Teri fell sick and we thought it was the flu or covid and waited for it to pass. It didn't and when she began to struggle we went to the ER. We hoped for a Zpac or something but what we got was a cancer diagnosis. We are still waiting on additional test results but the prognosis at this point isnt great. This is how my mother and my grandmother also passed. It's something thar happens when someone is born with Retinoblastoma. It comes back later as something different.
It's just me and Teri. And for me, It's me against the world supporting, fighting for, advocating for, and providing for her and my children alone. I've missed some work to be at the hospital with my sister and Ill likely miss some more. I need to buy some things to make Teri more comfortable when she comes home from the hospital and for her time left. We dont have central air and I need a window unit to keep her room more comfortable for her. I need to fix some of the flooring in our manufactured home to make it more stable for her and the nurses who will be coming in. I need to be able to buy her more things to make her comfortable and I need to be able to maybe miss work to be with her without fear of losing my electricity or home.
If you know me you know I hate asking for help and I try so very hard not to. But in this case if I dont ask for help I wont be able to give my sister the comfort she needs both physically and emotionally from me in the coming times.
Some of you are seeing this at the end of our journey. It all happened super fast. Literally one month from diagnosis. If you are just seeing this now Teri has passed and Im looking for help to be able to cremate and claim her ashes. I want to spread her ashes with our mom and dad.
I hate asking, begging , being reliant on help. I wouldn't do it for me. Im doing it for her. And I cant thank you all enough.
