Hello! My name is Sofia Corral, and I am currently finishing my last year at the University of Amsterdam’s Media and Culture program. An aspiring Spanish director and screenwriter who with the help of a remarkable team, has begun shooting a short film by the name “I Am My Mother’s Daughter”. This project is the culmination of hard work, passion, and the desire to shed light on the raw side of life. A bare vision.

Growing up as young women we all listen to horror stories from our surrounding older female figures, many of us taking cover under the fallacy that this is all they will ever be. Traumatic narratives that we will grieve from afar. Nevertheless, as time passes these experiences creep closer to us and suddenly you are an eighteen-year-old girl seeking comfort in the arms of loved ones, each carrying an unwanted hand print on their skin. “I Am My Mother’s Daughter” strives to tell the story of a girl’s breaking point as she attempts to live with the trauma of sexual assault. With this film, I aim to remove the stigma that has been built around the subject of sexual assault and instead bring this discussion into the foreground through the exploration of themes such as femininity, maternity, and trauma. Hopefully providing a space in which to discuss and navigate the aftermath that sexual assault victims are expected to live with. Here it is important to mention the number one complication faced during pre-production of this film: the casting of the female protagonist. The reason was that most interested actresses were unable to go through with the project, because in their own words “it hit too close to home”.

The Story
“I Am My Mother’s Daughter” is the story of Margot, an ordinary girl, seeking to make a life for herself within the city of Amsterdam. A wish that becomes impossible from one day to another when sexual assault ceases to be a distant nightmare and becomes part of who she is. With each minute of the film, Margot embodies the stages of PTSD through the constant grieving of her former self. Up until her breaking point, a point of no return.
This is a story that has been told many times before, but with the help of our devoted team, we provide a new lens that denounces the romanticisation of trauma and instead aims to explore the intricate interior of the human subject.

Goal of The Campaign
This project has been able to come to life through the help of a dedicated crew and cast that believes in the importance of getting such a story out there. We went beyond our initial budget to create a powerful finished product with compelling shots. Consequently, to maintain this level of quality and to get this project out there via international film festivals, we are in urgent need of financial support. Will you help make this vision a reality? By contributing today, you will form part of a group interested in raising awareness for an unfortunately familiar and recurrent experience! Your assistance will be acknowledged with a mention in the film's end credits (unless you prefer it remain anonymous).
