A SERVICE DOG MEANS SAFETY

I am reaching out to you today to help a dear friend, Angel Fraguada. I’ve been friends with him for twelve years, bonded through diabetes alert dogs.
Diabetes alert dogs are life savers, I know this personally. Before getting her dog, my daughter was having several diabetic seizures each week. In the ten years her alert dog Little Bear has been with us, he has kept my daughter 100% seizure free. Angel had a dog who performed daily miracles for him as well. Tragically his amazing dog, Izzy, just died of cancer, leaving Angel not only devastated from the loss, but also at medical risk.
Angel was rushed to the hospital in 2002, at age 24, after he fell unconscious after performing a high rope act in the Cirque. Angel was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. Type One is not caused by food choices or lack of exercise. It is an autoimmune disease like multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis. And while we see articles about type 2 diabetes which shows that the disease is treatable and can be cured, that is not true of type 1. Type 1 diabetes attacks the pancreas, which then stops producing insulin.
There is no cure.
A type 1 diabetic must constantly check the sugar levels in their blood stream to stay alive. If these levels are too high or too low, it can lead to death. Having issues regulating the levels over time can lead to kidney disease, blindness, amputation, and other complications.
For Angel a diabetes alert dog has been the answer.
A diabetes alert dog can tell when their person has gone out of normal blood sugar range and signal them in time to correct the problem. For Angel, this meant that he didn’t need to fear going to sleep at night – Izzy, his diabetes alert dog who was his partner for eight years, would wake Angel up if his blood sugar got too low. Low blood sugar can lead to seizures, coma, and death.
Can you imagine going to sleep each night, not knowing if you’ll wake up in the morning?
Today, we are joining together as a community to help Angel get the help he needs with a new alert dog. Angel will get his scent-trained dog from the same organization, Southern Coast K9, where he got his past-partner, Izzy, knowing that their training was exactly right for Angel’s lifestyle.
I can assure you, having known Angel for over a decade and watching his relationship with Izzy, that Angel’s new alert dog: Will have a wonderful life; Will be beautifully cared for; Will be respected and loved.
I invite you to make a donation right now. The quicker Angel’s new dog is in his life, the safer Angel will be. I also ask that you share this on social media, tagging friends and family who love dogs or have diabetes in their families.
I deeply thank you for your generosity.
