A Second Chance for Toby

Toby is more than just a dog, he’s family. He has brought us endless love, and comfort. But over the past few months, we've watched him begin to lose the ability to walk, and it's been heartbreaking.

After multiple vet visits, signs and symptoms point to a condition called IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) a serious spinal issue where the discs between the vertebrae bulge or rupture, compressing the spinal cord and causing immense pain, nerve damage, and sometimes paralysis. While we’re still in the process of confirming the diagnosis we can't completely rule out other severe conditions, such as a spinal tumor, which is most likely cancerous.

This makes the need for testing even more urgent. Without these next steps, we’re left in the dark and the devastating reality is that if we’re unable to move forward with diagnosis and treatment soon, we may be faced with the heartbreaking decision to put Toby down.

Despite everything, Toby hasn’t lost his spirit. He still eats, drinks, and even tries to walk using just his front legs. His strength and determination have been truly inspiring. He’s not giving up, and we won’t either.

We’ve found a neurologist willing to try and help Toby, but as you can imagine the cost of diagnostic testing, surgery, and post-operative care is significant. IVDD surgery, when done early, can be life-changing. Dogs in grades 1-4 of the disease have a 90% chance of full recovery, and even dogs in the most severe category (grade 5) have a 50-60% chance of walking again.
