Roy Schumpert's battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia
On October 12th, 2023, Janet took Roy to the ER because he had been experiencing extreme fatigue and was out of breath. He was admitted the the hospital. After several tests, 3 blood transfusions and a bone marrow biopsy, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, with myelodysplasia syndrome. This is a rapid form of cancer that is in the blood and interferes with the production of normal white blood cells, red blood cell, and platelets. AML is rare with fewer than 200,000 cases a year. Roy and Janet has spent 7 weeks in the hospital. The first chemo treatment plan didn't work and cancer cells increased to an alarming number. Also during the first treatment Roy contracted an aggressive/invasive infection in his arm which also made its way into his lungs. So now he is fighting the cancer cells with chemo, and his immune system is having to fight this infection.
Roy and his family are in the fight for their lives, and they need our support. Roy is self employed and Janet works for Greenville County Schools. They have medical insurance, but with cost of the extensive stay in the Hospital, test, Infusion centers 7 days a week for IV antibotics, & cancer treatments. Doctors say that Roy will also need surgery to remove the infection from his lungs and his arm. Possibly even amputation of his arm. After the infection is gone and Roy is in remission, he will need a Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant requiring an extended month stay in the hospital.
Please consider helping us support Roy and his family as they go through these times.
