WGS Fundraising page for Gambia 2024

Since the establishment of the Gambia project in 2004, the bond between Withington Girls’ School and the communities in Gambia has grown stronger. Over the years, the partnership has undertaken various projects to develop the community, such as the improvement of the Mama Tamba Nursery School which supports many local children. We strongly believe every child should have access to education.

This year, it’s our turn, to continue the legacy of 20 years of unwavering support offered by this remarkable charity. As the 2024 Gambia team, we hope to continue funding the improvement of the Mama Tamba Nursery school and associated Multipurpose hall - an integral part of the children’s educational journey. Moreover, through the development of a feeding program, we hope to ensure that children have enough to eat during the day. Our aim is to continue our support and sponsorship of teachers at the nursery school, and provide the much needed stationary. We hope the children will be able to enjoy their lessons to the fullest. We truly believe that these children deserve to have access to these facilities especially because of the enormous impacts that early education has on the rest of our lives. With our support we hope that these children will be able to take their lives further than ever and thrive.

We aspire to support the new local projects including a soap making project, which utilises locally, organically grown ingredients like aloe vera and beeswax. The profits generated from these initiatives not only supports the wages of young people who support the project, but also circulates back into the local projects. This will allow the projects to become self funded and young people the opportunity to seek a higher education from the wages they gain. We also hope to contribute donations and equipment to institutions like the Maternity Health Centre during our visit. We believe that this support would greatly benefit the mothers, as unfortunately there is still a high maternity death rate due to poor healthcare.

However, in order to fund all the projects we propose, your support is essential to raise our target of £8000 by December 2024 to support the Illiasa community. This would be extremely appreciated by not only our team, but the pupils at the Mama Tamba Nursery, the young locals and all those at the Maternity Health Centre. We thank you in advance!

Please do follow our instagram page if you would like to follow our various fundraising projects over the next few months, and see the improvements we make in the Illiasa community.
