A Safe Place for Glenn

Donation protected
Hello everyone. If you haven’t heard the terrible news about Glenn Slaughter, he suffered a stroke the 3rd week in September. The great news is that he was rushed into emergency surgery to bust the clot that had traveled to his brain and he is coming along post-surgery. At this time he is in a rehab facility which is part of St. Charles Hospital. He is at the beginning of the hardest fight of his life.

Glenn has a rough and tough exterior but a soft and warm heart. As you may already know, Glenn and Michelle’s parents had severe damage to their home from Hurricane Sandy. Glenn worked hard to make the house livable again for their parents (and he did), but they were hit with another bad situation. Glenn and Michelle’s Dad passed away, and the house was just too big and too much for Mrs. Otten (Dolores) to handle on her own.

Mrs. Otten sold the house. Glenn started renovating his house to build an apartment for her on the first floor and one for him on the second floor. She moved in, although the renovations were barely underway. They were sharing a small space in the house while he was ripping the rest of it apart when this medical event happened.

Here is the part where we need your help.

Eventually, Glenn will get out of the rehab, and he will need a safe place to come home to that is semi handicap accessible. While he can walk, his vision has been affected by the stroke, and he has trouble with one of his arms. Since nobody will know what his condition is when he is deemed well enough to be released from the rehab, the plan has changed. Now he needs to be the one living on the ground floor, with Mom living in the upstairs apartment (once it is built).
Mrs. Otten will need a stair lift or something to make it easier to go up and down the stairs. The walls all have to be put back up, painted and appliances purchased, installed, etc. etc. The place is practically down to the studs.

Glenn’s sister Michelle and her husband, Glenn’s brother-in-law Chris, tried pulling together a volunteer construction crew to physically do the work. Unfortunately, they could not find enough people to volunteer, so they have a crew, but they will need to get paid for their work. And again, they will need to buy everything, including lumber, drywall, paint, appliances, rugs, furniture and who knows what else.?

At this time, we are betting on the kindness and charity of all of the friends that have crossed Glenn’s path over the many years he was working in the Hamptons (or building something for you in your house). Besides any residual medical bills, it is going to be highly critical for him to be able to come home to a safe place so he can continue to heal.. It will be a 2 for 1 because you’ll be giving Glenn and Michelle’s Mom a safe place to live as well.

No donation is too small. If you can only afford to give $10, that’s $10 more that they will have to get this work done. But, if you can afford $100 or $200 or more, by all means, please give as much as you can. Any amount you can spare will be a blessing for the Slaughter family.

This fundraiser page will be kept up to date with any relevant news or information the family wants to share. And if you have any good pictures of Glenn from over the years, I encourage you to share them with me so I can post them. And if you have a funny story to go with the picture, that would be even better.

Finally, you may or may not know me, but I volunteered to help Michelle set up and manage this fundraiser. I know Glenn from many years in the Hamptons. I have had a family member who suffered a stroke and know how hard it affects the family. It’s a long hard road ahead, and Michelle will have enough to do and enough stress from dealing with Glenn’s situation, watching out for her Mom and taking care of her husband, her daughter and worrying about her son in the military.

The money will be deposited in a Paypal that the family has supplied to me (less any fees that GoFundMe or Paypal charges). Every penny collected (less fees) will go directly for the benefit of the Slaughter family.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and if you feel comfortable doing so, please share on your own Facebook page.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Donna
