A Safe Landing for Francesca

As I stared at Jamie's text, I'll admit that I wasn't focused on my vocation but on her sanity. "Can we let a MAP teacher/ college student stay with us? She is a doll and is in need." That's it, a yes or no question and via text no less.

What I said: Let me think about it. James needs to weigh in.

What I thought: You've got to be sh*tting me!

These are the kinds of texts one receives when you are married to Jamie, a champion of the poor and downtrodden, with the energy and restraint of a chinchilla on amphetamines.

I'm happy to report that as our latest addition to our home, Francesca is indeed a doll and, unfortunately, is in need. After the untimely death of her 2003 Corolla and an epic falling out with her parents, she needs our help. Her transportation costs eat up much of her earnings at MAP. As a commuter to school, she's using Lyft (because it's cheaper than Uber) and public transit when possible. When we find housing for her, the upfront costs are daunting (first, last, and security deposit). We paid the last couple of payments on her tuition installment plan, which will start again in the fall. She's a hard worker, although a bit overwhelmed by it all. She knows she has a safe landing spot with us but needs a path to independence and agency. We have the beginnings of a plan but don't have everything figured out.
