'Nostalgia becomes uncanny, self-identity begins to unravel, and the digital
world merges with the real one in ways that are beautiful yet deeply unsettling.'
What Is This Film?
A Recounting of a Fictional Self is an experimental short film about the feeling of forgetting past versions of oneself—the people we used to be in relationships, friendships, jobs, etc. As we move through life, we leave pieces of ourselves behind.
Blending dreamlike visuals, psychological horror, and nostalgic distortion, this film captures the unsettling experience of looking back at your life and feeling like it belongs to someone else. Using abstract storytelling, fragmented memories, and experimental aesthetics, we aim to create an atmospheric meditation on identity, loss, and the digital era’s effect on our perception of time.
The Team
Given the film’s intimate nature, our crew is small but deeply committed—just myself and two exceptional filmmakers, Hannah Goodman and James Greenwood. Together, we share a unified vision for this project, drawn to its exploration of memory, dreams, and the blurred line between past and present.
We know that experimental films can be challenging to define, especially when the creative process is constantly evolving. However, we’re deeply grateful for your support in helping us bring this vision to life.
Why This Film Matters
We live in an era obsessed with nostalgia—childhood photos resurfacing on social media, old home movies being rediscovered, past friendships romanticized through hazy filters. But memory isn’t perfect. It’s fluid, unreliable, and sometimes unsettling. By supporting this project, you’re helping us create something deeply personal yet universally haunting.
