Hello everyone, I’m Dylan.
As many of you know, in 2019, my father was diagnosed with Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy (OPMD). This type of muscular dystrophy is rare, and affects 1 in 1000 decedents of Quebec. Unfortunately, it runs in my family, and my father’s mom passed away from the disease in 2014.
My dad’s disease has progressed to the point where he has little-to-no mobility. He is falling down constantly and injuring himself which further progresses his disease. His specialist said that MaineCare will pay for a motorized wheelchair for him, but this takes up to 5 months. They also require that a handicap ramp be installed (or in the process of being installed) before they can begin that paperwork. These ramps must meet specific regulations. My parents’ house is old, and we need to build the ramp, but also replace two doors.
If you know my father, you know that he was/is an incredibly hard worker and extremely active. Even after his diagnosis he maintained an active lifestyle. The last couple of years have seen him regress. My parents don’t have a lot of money as disability doesn’t pay much, and they are raising two young girls. A few people suggested that I ask for help on their behalf. My father is very proud and would not ask for help, but we want to get this ramp built so he can be safe and have a better quality of life.
Any help or a share will be met with gratitude. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
