Much needed thyroid surgery for a public school teacher
Donation protected
My name is Barbi, and I'm a public school teacher. I teach 11th and 12th grade English at a high school in North Texas, and I love my job. However, the last year has been very hard for me. I've been diagnosed with not one, but two auto immune disorders, Hashimoto's disease and Graves disease. These are both auto immune disorders that affect the thyroid. It's relatively rare to have both, and those of us who suffer from both auto immune disorders spend our lives switching back and forth between the two, which is highly unpleasant and involves symptoms like heat intolerance, heart palpations, weight loss, weight gain, brain fog, blurred vision, eye pain, and extreme fatigue. These symptoms drastically impacted my quality of life, and I've had to miss out on a lot during this past year because of my symptoms. My endocrinologist recommended that I have my thyroid removed to prevent the auto immune disorders so that I would not switch back and forth between Grave's and Hashimoto's. My surgery is scheduled for next week. Last week, I learned that I need to pay $2734 for my surgery. When I called to ask about a payment plan, I was told I need to put 60% of the cost down on the surgery, and then I can pay the rest out over six months. 60% is $1640! And that leaves me with payments of nearly $200 a month for 6 months.
As I said at the beginning, I'm a public school teacher, and I work two jobs to make ends meet. I don't have the money to put 60% down on my surgery, and I already have a lot of existing medical debt from the tests it took to diagnose me and determine if I was a candidate for surgery. If I'm unable to put together the money, I will have to cancel my surgery, and live with frequent switches between Grave's and Hashimoto's and their accompanying symptoms, frequent bloodwork, and frequent medication changes.
I know times are tough for a lot of people, but if anyone out there can donate anything, I will be grateful for the rest of my life. If you're unable to donate, believe me I understand. I just humbly ask that you share this go fund me with others.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading this.
