Denise was a beautiful soul—gentle, spiritual, and full of love—and she was taken from this world far too soon, and far too cruelly.
She loved life in a way that felt intentional. Deep. Meaningful. And from the very beginning, she had a soft spot for animals.
At just 16 years old, Denise earned a scholarship for social work, already showing the compassion that would shape her life. She later became a youth diplomat in international relations and traveled to South Africa in 1982, during a time when Nelson Mandela was still imprisoned. She spent time in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, forming connections that would last decades.
One of the most special moments of her life happened there—when locals brought her to meet cheetahs. It wasn’t just an experience, it was something she carried in her heart forever. That was Denise… she didn’t just pass through places—she connected, she felt, she remembered.
Denise was also deeply spiritual. She found comfort and meaning in music, especially The Doors. Jim Morrison’s words spoke to her in a way that stayed with her.
Twelve and a half years ago, on the anniversary of his passing, Denise spent the night chanting and praying. And not long after, a tiny Bengal mix kitten came into her life—as if he had been sent just for her. She named him after Jim Morrison… and over time, he became known as Zachary James.
Zachary wasn’t just her cat.
He was her companion, her comfort, her constant.
He was her world.
A little over a month ago, Denise reached out to my rescue after a friend suggested she do so. Our rescue focuses on the forgotten ones—the adult and senior cats who are often left behind—and we also help the elderly and disabled care for the pets they love so deeply.
Denise was battling so much. She was living with MS, and her cancer had returned. But even then, she wasn’t thinking about giving Zachary up. She just needed help while she went into the hospital for a procedure. She wanted him somewhere safe… somewhere he would be loved… somewhere that felt like home.
She wasn’t ready to say goodbye to him.
And truthfully… she never got the chance.
On Monday night, March 30th, Denise went into the hospital.
On Tuesday, March 31st, Zachary came into our care.
He arrived as this sweet, serious little soul—quiet, observant… and somehow already carrying a sadness he couldn’t understand. Since then, he has been grieving. You can see it in him.
Zachary also has medical needs. He is diabetic and requires insulin injections every 12 hours. He has limited use of his back legs, making it hard for him to walk without wobbling. He needs consistent care, medication, and prescription food to stay stable.
And yet… he is so gentle. So loving. So deeply connected.
Denise left us a voicemail on April 5th. She had made it home and was having complications, but she was hopeful. She said she couldn’t wait to see Zachary again.
That was the last time we heard her voice.
She was taken from this world too soon… leaving behind the one soul who meant everything to her.
Now, Zachary is here with us. Safe. Loved. But missing his person in a way we can’t fully explain.
We want to honor Denise the only way that truly matters—by giving Zachary the life she fought so hard to hold onto.
Her love didn’t end.
It just needs somewhere to go.
If Denise ever touched your life… if her story moves you… if you believe in the kind of love that doesn’t disappear when someone is gone… please help us care for Zachary.
Your support will go directly toward his insulin, medical supplies, and specialized care for the rest of his life.
He was her world.
Now we’re asking for help to be his.
