A Plea for Stanton: Battling Blood Cancer

Stanton Grazette, a beloved member of the BVI community, is facing a challenging health battle with a blood cancer. After tripping over a cable at work he braced himself on a partition wall. With the simple stumble he felt an electrifying sharp pain all the way down his spine. Repeated visits lead to an MRI, which revealed 5 bones in his spine were cracked and the L-5 vertebrae collapsed.

Doctors did not know why. A series of blood test, led to a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. Multiple myeloma is a type of bone marrow cancer that affects several areas of the body including softening of the bones. This life-altering condition has taken a toll on his physical and emotional well-being, and he is in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant and additional treatments. Stanton is enduring debilitating pain, bone softness, and severe mobility limitations.

As the primary insurance, NHI only covers medication received locally. NHI does not cover any portion of this type of cancer treatment. The cost of the bone marrow transplant is $150,000. Stanton's supplemental insurance covers most of the cost ($100,000); however, the treatment facility requires the remaining portion upfront before treatment can begin. This leaves Stanton and his family with a significant out-of-pocket expense of $50,000. Thus far, they have been using personal savings to cover the cost of medical bills, testing, airfare to back and forth to Puerto Rico. This financial burden, coupled with the emotional and physical strain of his illness, has pushed them to their limits.

Stanton is more than just a patient; he's a pillar of our community. As a dedicated pastor, he has selflessly served his congregation and the wider community. His annual donations to families in need, fundraising efforts for the Family Support Network, and tireless work with troubled youth have made a profound impact. He never thought to look to the community as a whole for help, in fact this page was only created after a family member strongly encouraged them to turn to the loving community for assistance.
