Veteran Crisis Management Specialist Faces a Perfect Storm of Medical Emergencies
Hello everyone!
I‘m June, Roger Henning’s wife of almost 40 years, but many of you would have known him for a lifetime.
On Thursday, the 13th of April 2023, he fell, cracked his head, injured his back and shoulders, and remained on a cold tiled floor for almost six hours. I could not lift him and became desperately concerned for Roger and my inability to ease his physical and emotional pain. In despair, I called Paul, a friend from Five Dock RSL, and together we carried Roger to his comfortable, warm bed. In retrospect, I ought to have called an ambulance.
Roger has always been the first to help in a crisis. Some emergencies have put him at personal risk, including evacuating 200 guests from a high-rise hotel fire in Kuala Lumpur and on-site at the horrific Port Arthur massacre, where 35 people were gunned down in cold blood.
Throughout his professional and personal life, he has dodged numerous bullets, some live and others symbolic. This accident has shattered our self-sufficiency and placed us in a position to humbly seek your HELP.
The cost of the recommended safety equipment inside our rented apartment, mobility appliances, and weekly visits to an exercise physiologist to rebuild Roger’s atrophied musculature, combined with physiotherapy and massage, to name just a few, are beyond my financial resources.
For example, a mobility scooter costs over $15,000 and a tip-up chair around $5,000, just the tip of the iceberg.
While his limited mobility and sight issues hinder his independence and participation in social activities, his connections with the community and friends have also diminished.
As his wife, my deepest desire is that the latter years of his life be filled with love and support at home and not in residential care.
If you have anything to spare to support Roger’s recovery, we warmly accept any act of generosity.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank Five Dock RSL for providing ‘Vital Call,’ which will be installed on Monday 15th of May.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my call for assistance. I would be grateful for anything you may have to spare to help Roger improve his independence and well-being.
Sincere and warm regards
June
