Sandra is getting a new chair! WOOHOO! Her current chair is 10 years old, and is finally on the path to getting a new set of wheels that can help her maintain her independence and keep her safe as she continues to be the badass artist, writer, social advocate, and magical human being that she is.
The new chair will be safer and better for where Sandra's physical needs are now, and there is one feature in particular that is life-changing for a full time wheelchair user with limited upper body mobility - a lift that can raise the chair up to nearly eye level with standing people. Whaaaaat?? How awesome is THAT?!
Being at eye level removes SO many barriers to accessibility for a full time wheelchair user, from interacting in stores and accessing hard to reach items and buttons, to being a fully acknowledged part of conversations in group settings. We able -bodied people simply don't realize how important the ability to be eye-level is!
However, as critical to accessibility as it is, Medicare will not cover the cost of this feature. We have negotiated a significant discount on the cost with the vendor, but the rest has to be paid for out of pocket. Her chair order is all set to go, but this has to be paid for with the order.
Sandra has given her whole life to her family and those she loves, raising her siblings herself from the age of 19, holding down a house and a household through it all, becoming an artist, a writer, a businesswoman, a community leader and a beloved friend and partner. Disability is EXPENSIVE. It leaves people with very little resources, and Sandra needs the village.
Come on village, let's get Sandra some awesome new wheels with the ability to stand at eye level with her community!
