A new wheelchair for Drew

I would like to introduce you to Andrew Brackin (AKA Drew). Drew and I volunteer with Ft. Wayne Railroad Historical Society outside Ft. Wayne, Indiana. I cannot say enough good things about him. This endeavor has been placed on my heart. I would like to raise money for a new industrial strength handcrafted wheelchair for Drew. Drew likes to work and get dirty. Welding sparks fly and grease cakes everything when working on railroad equipment. Drews current chair of 10 years is not equipped to handle the work he does at his current job, home, or at the shop.

My thoughts are a flame resistant seat, a new run flat all terrain wheel setup for those uneven ballast beds and jagged metal pieces everywhere, and detachable tool bags would give Drew all the creature comforts needed to work on the railroad all the live long day.

I have spoken with the owner of Bailey Built Wheelchairs and explained what Drew's chair would have to endure. Bailey's will focus on a handcrafted chair to fit Drew's exact size and needs. The fit and finish of the final product will hold up to his active industrial lifestyle. We believe $6500 would provide this type of performance chair for Drew.

I have seen Drew use his mechanical knowledge to teach new members, including me! He has also taken the lead role in repairing several pieces of equipment in the shop. Drew is always willing to get involved and doesn't use his handicap as an excuse.

Drew has been married for almost 8 years to Kirsten and they have a 3 year old son named, Finn. Drew loves bringing Finn to the shop, who I am sure is going to be a future Ft. Wayne member. I have seen a photo of Finn at Halloween in an extremely detailed version of Finn's favorite steam engine "765". I think he even won a prize for that costume!

Drew is a humble and earnest person. He has been a lifetime train enthusiast and loves volunteering. Drew enjoys using his mechanical knowledge to help welcome the younger generation and the society's next volunteers.
