HOW WE MET:
Eunice and I met when we were 16 and she received a scholarship to study as an exchange student from Mozambique at my high school in Vermont for a year. Her host family lived down the street from me. Sometimes you meet people who you just know are going to profoundly impact your life— I was lucky enough to find one of those friends in Eunice.
WHAT'S GOING ON:
Eunice and her three young kids are living in an unsafe situation. The kids’ dad is controlling and abusive, and she doesn’t have the legal or familial support to separate from him. She is about to complete her BA in Psychology and is ready to take her kids and diploma and start over in a new city.
THE PLAN:
She plans to take a three day bus to the capital and rent a room temporarily while looking for longer term housing with the support of a women’s organization. Once settled, she is going to take the IELTS exam start applying to PhD programs in the States. She's been planning this move for years, but wanted to wait until she had her diploma in hand.
EXPENSES:
4 Passports: $520
A new phone and SIM card: $300
Bus tickets: $210
Spending money for the trip: $60
2 months rent in Maputo: $600
2 months cost of food: $250
New school clothes for the kids (they will only be able to bring a small bag): $130
IELTS exam: $250
Total: $2,320
HOW TO HELP:
You can contribute financially either here or directly to me via Venmo if you prefer (Zoe-Nardone). I use the app WorldRemit to transfer the money to Eunice. Sharing is also greatly appreciated!
