A New Start for a Homeless Mother and Son
Donation protected
Hi, my name is John Capasso. I'm a retired special education teacher from Mainland Regional High School in Linwood, NJ. I'm fundraising for a former student, Michael Spreitzer, and his mother who became homeless on June 1, 2023. They stayed in a motel until their money ran out and are now living in their car.
Since May 2022 they have been on a state/federal waiting list for low-income housing - Affordable Homes New Jersey. Applicants for what housing becomes available are chosen by lottery.
While they wait, they have an opportunity to rent an apartment, but they need to raise $3,625 to cover the first month's rent ($1,450) and the security deposit ($2, 175).
Once in they can cover the monthly expenses. Michael's mother is on Social Security. Michael has worked at Fitzpartick's Deli & Steakhouse in Somers Point, NJ for the past five years as a busboy, dishwasher, and host. However, the initial outlay is insurmountable. Without help, they will remain homeless for the foreseeable future.
Michael's dad died three years ago. In October 2022, Michael and his mom had to sell the house they had lived in since 1990. They could not keep up with the mortgage and maintenance costs. A family "friend" stole what proceeds were left after the closing costs. They found a six-month winter rental. Before the end of the lease, the property manager told them they could stay indefinitely on a month-to-month basis. But in May they were given short notice to vacate the premises by the end of the month.
The Fitzpatrick's "family" is doing what it can to help. But we're hoping customers who know and like Michael - and their family and friends - can help us meet our goal. Anything you can afford to give will be deeply appreciated.
