On December 3rd, 2022- my mom lost her home of 30 years to a 5-alarm- fire at the age of 60. As she was ready to call it a night while streaming her favorite Netflix show- her building was bombarded by fire fighters evacuating the entire building. The damage started almost immediately. The picture you see on the cover shows just some of the 200 fire fighters that it took over 6 hours to fight the inferno. The building was left completely inhabitable and over 40 families were left homeless right before the holidays.
However, this is not meant to be a sob story. I refuse to let this tragedy hinder us any longer. This is meant to be the start of something new. 9 painful months later of my mom not having a place to call her own and trying to fight/navigate this broken system- she has finally been handed keys for a new apartment. That's it though. No resources, no money- not even a pan to make herself a meal. Go figure. She was not able to recover anything other than some essential documents from the fire and so moving into this new apartment- she is starting from absolute scratch. The moving costs alone (brokers fee, security deposits, first months, etc) have depleted any savings she might of had. SO- if you've made it this far, thank you. If you can help- trust me, every penny counts. If you can't donate- please share. I wouldn't wish this on anybody's elderly mother, but we are to remain hopeful. Right?
El 3 de Diciembre de 2022, mi madre perdió su hogar de 30 años en un incendio de 5 alarmas a la edad de 60 años. Mientras se alistaba para terminar sunoche transmitíendo su programa favorito de Netflix, su edificio se llenaba de bomberos que evacuaron a todo el edificio. El daño comenzó casi de inmediato. La imagen que ves en la portada muestra solo algunos de los 200 bomberos lo cual tardaron más de 6 horas en combatir el infierno. El edificio quedó completamente inhabitable y mas de 40 familias se quedaron sin casa justo antes de la Navidad.
Sin embargo, no queremos que esto siga siendo una historia sollozante. Me niego a dejar que esta tragedia nos obstaculice por más tiempo. Quiero que esto a sea el comienzo de algo nuevo y mejor para mi madre. Han pasado 9 dolorosos meses en los cuales mi mama no tuvo un lugar al cual llamar suyo. Durante estos meses trato de luchar e navegar este sistema roto. Finalmente le han entregado las llaves de un nuevo apartamento. Sin embargo, eso es todo. Sin recursos, sin dinero, ni siquiera una sartén para hacerse una comida. Imagínate. Lamentablemente ella no pudo recuperar nada más que algunos documentos esenciales despues del incendio. Al entrar a este nuevo apartamento, está comenzando desde cero. Los costos de la mudanza (honorarios de corredores, depósitos de seguridad, primer mes, etc.) han agotado cualquier ahorro que pudiera haber tenido. En fin, si has llegado hasta aquí, gracias. Si puedes ayudar, confía en mí, cada centavo cuenta. Si no puedes donar, por favor comparta. No le desearía esta situacion a nadie, pero debemos mantener la esperanza. ¿Asi no dicen?
