The Tea:

About two weeks ago I noticed one of the wheels of my scooter was crooked. My mechanic looked at it and told me the suspension is broken. A current repair would cost 3 times as much as it would be to buy a new scooter. I’ve contacted DSHS daily, called insurance and called my case manager, and they have not been able to get me a new or rental scooter.

My scooter has been a lifeline for me, helping me stay independent and maintain my dignity as a disabled person. Being able to get a new scooter would help me keep my independence and continue managing day-to-day life comfortably and without the threat of injury.

I have a degenerative nerve condition that has slowly taken my mobility over the course of the last 20 some-odd years and a bit over 5 years, my healthcare team made me aware that a mobility aid was a necessary part of my life going forward after being in and out of the hospital with all of the injuries sustained while trying to maintain my mobility with the sole use of a cane. Without a scooter I feel isolated, my mental and physical health is impacted. I can’t find my way out of this without the help of my community.

I want to be someone that represents the strength and resilience of disabled people. Living a free and dignified existence and creating visibility for people in my community will continue to allow the world to grow with us and understand the importance of letting us in and inviting us to the table.
