Hello, my name is Robert Hughes, and I was born with Cerebral Palsy. Throughout my life, I’ve faced many physical challenges, but I’ve always tried to meet them with determination and positivity.
A little bit about me: I’m proud to have represented Canada in para athletics (Shot Put, Discus & Javelin) from 1999 to 2016 Competing for my country was one of the greatest honours of my life. I have also had the privilege of being a statistician with the Sarnia Sting Hockey Club 2007-present.
Today, I’m reaching out for support to help me purchase a new lift chair something that would greatly improve my comfort, safety, and independence at home.
My current lift chair has sadly broken beyond repair leaving me struggling to stand up, sit down, and rest comfortably. Because of my condition, a safe and supportive lift chair isn’t just a convenience — it’s essential for reducing pain, improving mobility, and maintaining my dignity in daily life.
5 1/2 years ago after sustaining nerve damage from a COVID-19 infection that attacked my central nervous system, I was later diagnosed with follicular lymphoma. It’s a treatable and manageable form of cancer, but it’s also chronic requiring ongoing care and attention. These combined health issues have made movement and comfort an even greater challenge, making specialized equipment like a lift chair truly life-changing.
The cost of a new, properly fitted lift chair is approximately $5400, including delivery and setup. Unfortunately, I rely on Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) benefits as my primary income, and this type of essential equipment is not covered more then 1 time.
Now, I find myself needing to ask for help. Every donation, no matter the amount, will bring me closer to having the proper chair I need to live safely, manage pain, and preserve my independence.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and for considering a donation. Your kindness, compassion, and generosity mean more than words can express.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Robert Hughes
