A new life for Michael

As most of you already know Michael has been battling kidney disease for as long as I can remember. In November 2012 was when our lives took a real turn for the worst. Michaels kidneys completely shut down and I had rushed him to the ER, where they immediately did emergency surgery and began him on Hemo Dialysis. At only 32 years old with a supportive wife and two beautiful daughters aged 4 and 1 He is now faced with a machine as his life support. In May 2013 days after our wedding, Michael had surgery where they placed a catheter in his stomach in order to begin peritoneal dialysis. This form of dialysis is a little less hard on your life, due to the fact that you get to do it in the comfort of your own home. However that being said it had to be done for 9 hours a day 7 days a week. Our bedroom was no longer a bedroom as it was filled with nothing but medical equipment. In July 2015 we thought our breakthrough in life finally came as Michael received a call for a match for a kidney transplant. Tears of joy fell from our eyes as we headed to the hospital. Little did I know I was about to literally sign a way for Michaels life. Michael went into surgery , which I was told Would be 4 hours . 5,6,7 hours had passed and at that point I started to panick. By the 8th hour the doctor finally came out to speak to me. I was told that the donors kidney had something called a “twisted” vein . They needed to work on the kidney without ice and blood flow , during that time of the repair mikes blood levels went toxic and he started to bleed out . The surgeon told me he had a 50/50 chance at surviving . The next day they did a ultrasound to see if the kidney was working. At that time they saw there was no blood flow due to a blood clot that had formed. They rushed him to the OR to remove the kidney . During that time the clot shot up into his lunges and he had a pulmonary embolism . It was one of the most hardest times in our lives. 3 weeks of being in ICU/ recovery we got to go home , without a kidney .
We have had many ups and downs since that surgery . We recently started doing home hemodialysis , which has been mentally and physically draining on everyone . As our house hold has only one solid income the new costs have been really tough as they use a huge amount of water and energy to function 5 days a week.
Just as we were beginning to feel hopeless as it has been three years since the failed transplant we got a surprise call at 2:30am last Tuesday ! With Michael having only a 4% chance of ever matching this donor turned out to be 100% of a match.
The surgery went extremely well, better then we could have ever imagined.
One week post op, Mike woke up swollen head to toe and un able to move . He caught some unknown virus .
With the new transplant Michael is on a lot of new medications , which not all are covered by our insurance, and we are required to drive to Hamilton 2-3 days a week, with parking and time off of work for his wife .
We would be extremely great full for any assistance hat we can get. We have a long road ahead of us , but the future is bright .
