Hi, my name is Carol Lenard and I live in Vancouver. I have suffered from kidney problems most of my life and, after I lost both kidneys, I was delighted to be the recipient of a kidney transplant in June of 2022. I did not know at the time that this transplant would soon threaten to end my life.
The surgeon who performed the kidney transplant was aware that the donor kidney was infected with two viruses. The viruses are CMV (cytomegalovirus) and BK (BK Polyomavirus). These viruses attack the immune system and affect the liver, brain, intestines, eyes, lungs, stomach and heart.
Since receiving the transplant, the quality of my life has plummeted, and I have developed many ailments. In people with a weakened immune system, CMV and BK can cause serious illnesses or death. And now the diseased kidney isn't working anymore, and I need a new kidney.
At no time was I informed that the transplant kidney I was about to receive was diseased. I was not given a choice to accept a diseased kidney or not. I believe that no one has the right to infect me with vicious diseases without my permission.
The issue is, because of these diseases, I am now in kidney failure. I have asked repeatedly for a new kidney but was refused without justification. The Canadian health community is telling me I can't have a new kidney because I am too old - I'm only 72 years young!
If I do not get a new kidney, I will be facing two options: dialysis or death. Dialysis means going to the hospital 3 times a week for 5 hours each time, being hooked up to machines. I was on dialysis for 3 years before the transplant and it was unsuccessful.
The only other option for me is to find a new kidney somewhere. Please help me to raise money to get a new kidney transplant and send a donation and/or your prayers.
Thankfully yours,
Carol Lenard
