I have sacrificed many years of my life, my financial freedom, and endured an emotionally abusive husband all for the sake of our children to have a better future than what I was born into. Now that they are grown, I am seeking a way out of this toxic marriage, but in the process, my husband has taken all of our marital funds and is using his years of law experience to ensure that I am dependent on him for the rest of my life. At the same time, I am in dire need of a corrective surgery from when I almost lost my life in 2017, and he had refused to help me pay for this, and instead suggested we get a divorce. I used to be in love with this man, but after what he has done, especially to our children, I simply will not agree to his demands for sex, even if continues to promise me money, a new car or to pay my expenses in exchange.

My Story: A Lifetime of Fear and Abuse

For 45 years, I've endured emotional and financial abuse from my husband. CPS was called twice to investigate claims about him and our oldest daughter, but after he intimidated our daughter and then yelled at CPS about private property, they left without taking action. I stayed because he was the breadwinner, and I hoped to provide a better future for our children than what I was born into. It helped that he had little involvement in their lives, only interacting briefly to enforce punishments and chores, while I managed all aspects of our household, doing everything to keep our children safe.

A Brush with Death and Financial Ruin

In 2017, I was rushed to the hospital where I died and was resuscitated after a gastrointestinal emergency. I survived eight surgeries, relying on prescribed opioids to continue working part-time and support myself since my husband was always strict on my usage of our marital funds. Now, I desperately need a final corrective surgery but can't afford it. In 2019, my husband suggested a "paper divorce" to avoid adding me to his health insurance, and then drained our joint accounts, taking over $6,000 and possibly more that I didn’t know about, leaving me with $0.11 cents. I recently found out that he also sold $50,000 worth of Bitcoin while we were married, which I saw none of. There is a lien on our house now, which he is saying he never used the money from our second mortgage. When we signed it, he said “You want to eat, don’t you?” and it was later uncovered during a welfare fraud case against him that he was making $5,000 per month at the time that he had me co-sign for this second mortgage.

Fighting for Freedom and Safety

In July 2023, our youngest son needed a place to stay, but my husband blocked the road with his tractor and truck, preventing him from coming home. This behavior was typical of him, as he always fought hard to maintain control over me. Despite agreeing to keep our house for our children’s sake in case they needed a place to go, he went back on his word, leading me to restart the divorce proceedings that were reconciled in 2020. My husband, with his two years of law school experience, uses legal loopholes to delay the process, hides assets, and refuses court-ordered car repairs. I fear leaving our home without someone to supervise his activities, as he continues to manipulate and control our situation for his sole benefit.

Urgent Need for Legal Help

With a judge’s order for car repairs ignored by my husband as well as refusal to pay arrears on spousal support and allegedly lying on his income and expense, I'm left working past retirement age in constant pain forced to take addictive medication long past the recommended period, which can cause serious damage while I am unable to afford the life-altering surgery that I need. My husband claims he lives on social security alone, yet he manages to afford frequent large purchases and consistent packages that simply do not even come close to matching his income and expense documents. I need a lawyer to assist and uncover hidden assets, secure my rightful share, and ensure my safety and my future.
