Aloha, my name is Kalake Fonua. My son, Joshua Teiko Fonua (age 22), is the sixth child of our eight children. Josh was born and raised in Hawaii until our family moved to Sacramento, CA when he was 11. There he attended and graduated with honors from Antelope High School. He then served a full-time mission (2019-2021) for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to Papua New Guinea, and then due to Covid-19 he was reassigned and completed his two-year service in Billings, Montana. He enrolled and started attending BYU-Idaho in the fall of 2021. In January 2022, he became very ill, which gradually led to the complete failure of his heart. He was admitted to Kaiser Hospital Roseville in March, where doctors did all they could for him. A week later, he was transported to Kaiser Hospital Santa Clara, and a week after that, he was transported to Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, where he was listed for a heart transplant. On Sunday, May 1, 2022, through a very successful procedure/surgery, Josh received a new heart from an anonymous and generous donor. As of today, Josh has and continues to recover very well. We finally received his accumulated medical bill, which amounts to over 2.5 million dollars. We are so grateful that our insurance will cover most of it. However, my wife and I continue to incur expenses outside of his medical bill for the ongoing care, which we have and will provide Josh for at least the next 6 months to a year.
