I am seeking support to enable me to complete my new film ‘Between ourselves’

What the film is about

between ourselves combines animation and documentary to explore notions of home and belonging, and the ways in which the legacies of an imperial past continue to live on in present day Britain.

The film brings together two narratives Dexter, my Jamaican born uncle who I met for the first time in recent years shares his journey of Migrating from Jamaica in 1960 to England aged four to join his parents, what it was like growing up England and his later experience of being impacted by the Windrush scandal.

The second narrative tells of my experience of growing up as person of mixed heritage in the midlands in a predominantly white working-class environment and my journey of connecting with my Jamaican heritage.

The two narratives connect as we embark on a journey to explore our ancestral past and the entangled history between Britain and Jamaica. 

This story is also linked to the broader history of many others like my uncle and to the history of the Uk.

Why going to Jamaica is important 

It will allow Dexter to try to reconstruct fragmented memories of his childhood and reconnect with family he hasn’t seen since age 4. 

To enable us to build a larger narrative about ourselves and the past, to understand history. 

What the money be used for

The money raised will be used to fund this 10 day trip, hopefully in march and the arts council grant I was recently awarded will go some way to funding this with being able to pay the other collaborators working on the project.(Camera operator and sound recordist)
