At just 19 years old, Mustafa should be focused on his future. His studies. His goals. His life.
Instead, three times every week, he sits connected to a dialysis machine just to stay alive.
Mustafa lives in Tripoli, Lebanon, where he has been diagnosed with chronic kidney failure. His condition is being treated at Monla Hospital, where doctors confirmed that both of his kidneys are no longer able to support his body.
They knew he had some kidney issues, so his father arranged routine medical tests to monitor his condition. It was through these routine tests that doctors made the shocking discovery that both of his kidneys were no longer functioning. The news shocked everyone. Doctors explained how serious his condition was, as toxins that should normally be removed by the kidneys had been building up in his body. He urgently needed treatment.
He now depends on dialysis three times every week.
Dialysis keeps him alive, but it does not give him his life back.
The only real solution is a kidney transplant.
When his parents learned this, both stepped forward immediately, ready to do anything to save their son. His father offered without hesitation, but sadly, he was not a match.
His mother was a match.
For Mustafa’s mother, the choice wasn't a choice at all. It was an instinct. The moment she learned she could be the one to save him, she committed to giving a piece of herself so her son could have a future.
She is ready to donate her kidney and undergo surgery to give Mustafa a second chance at life. This is the power of a mother’s love, and it has given Mustafa something he had not felt since his diagnosis - hope.
Due to the ongoing economic crisis in Lebanon, medical facilities require payment in full to proceed with such complex surgeries. This places an overwhelming financial burden on families, and it is why we are reaching out to the global community for help.
Before this life-saving transplant can happen, doctors must complete critical compatibility and tissue-matching tests to ensure the donation is safe and suitable for both mother and son.
These tests are urgent and cost $6,000 USD (approximately $9,300 AUD).
Once confirmed, the transplant surgery itself will cost $17,000 USD (approximately $26,350 AUD).
This transplant would free Mustafa from dialysis and give him the chance to live normally again. To continue his studies. To build his future. To live with dignity and independence.
Right now, he is not living. He is surviving.
The photos above show Mustafa with his mother, who is preparing to donate her kidney to save his life, Mustafa undergoing dialysis treatment, and continuing his studies despite his condition.
