Help Karen Rebuild Her Life After a Tragic Attack

My name is Karen Díaz, I’m 37 years old, and the proud mother of three wonderful children. In 2023, my life changed forever in the most devastating way.

While driving home in Ecuador with two of my children my daughter Luana, who was 7 at the time, and my 16-year-old son Sebastian. I was attacked by armed hitmen. For months, I had been a victim of extortion by criminal gangs, who demanded monthly payments in exchange for our safety. That day, they carried out their threats.

They shot me while I was driving with my children in the car. By a miracle, my kids were not physically hurt, but the trauma of that moment will stay with us forever.

As a result of the shooting, I was left paralyzed from the waist down. Since then, I’ve had to completely rely on a wheelchair and the help of others to do even the simplest daily tasks. This has been one of the most painful experiences of my life not only physically, but also emotionally.

After this tragedy, I had no choice but to return to the United States seeking safety and protection for my family. We left everything behind our home, our belongings, and the life we once knew just to be able to live without fear.

Now, I am trying to rebuild my life from the ground up. I am starting this GoFundMe to ask for help in recovering some of my independence and improving my quality of life. I am currently in need of:

• A special wheelchair and equipment for physical therapy

• Medical supplies for my daily care

• Home adaptations to make my living space more accessible and safe for me and my children
