Help Sherene Fight Inclusion Body Myositis

Hi, my name Is Lorraine Campbell and I am making this gofundme on behalf of my sister Sherene.  For the past 8 years Sherene has been battling this debilitating condition called Inclusion Body Myosotis.

In 2010 Sherene was experiencing pains in the right side of her chest. She went to the emergency room and the doctor discovered that her muscle enzymes were extremely elevated to 3600 and became concerned. After going to different specialists, while her condition got worse over the years,  the doctor was able to finally  diagnose her with Inclusion Body myositis. This medical condition causes significant muscle weakness that severely hampers the ability to walk up or down the stairs.    She is not able to get up from a seated position, she needs help with personal care, cooking and laundry.  In addition, she has problems getting around to doctor, and physical therapy  appointments.  Her condition has progressed to the point of needing 24/7 assistance. Considering all the physical challenges, she still need to be a mother to her 16 year old son.  I would like my sister to get the opportunity to be in a better position to have a better quality of life.  I have seen how this medical condition has limited my sister in a lot of ways. And I would like to see her being able to not be limited in certain areas of her life.

Unfortunately, there is no immediate cure or any medicine that is available for this condition. Her her current living situation poses a lot of problems for her to function with the least amount of stress. Currently,  physical and occupational therapy is the only help available for my sister to get stronger. Unfortunately, her insurance can only pay for $3,600 cap per year that works out to be 2 hours per week of therapy for 3 months and this does not provide enough therapy in order to make s significant difference to show any improvement in her health. Studies have shown that continuous therapy helps to improve this health condition.  So I would like to raise  money to pay for additional therapy when her insurance runs out.  Private pay therapy for the rest of the year could cost over $10,000, but whatever you can contribute will help.

In addition, I would like my sister to be able to get around very easily.  So her doctor is working on getting her a powered wheelchair.  As you can see in the picture above, she is at the hospital testing out the wheelchair.   The wheelchair also comes with a powerlift option that allows her to raise the height of the seat so that she can sit easily and it will be able to tilt her back so that she can sit back in the chair with minimal assistance.  But unfortunately the powerlift option is not covered by insurance and costs $2000.  If my sister could get the wheelchair with this option it would make it fully functional. It would help her be more independent and give her the opportunity to go outside safely.  She is not able to walk safely on her own and could fall.  Usually she spends most of her time indoors and does not have the freedom to go outside by herself or to be safely transported if she needs to go out.  So being able to go outside on her own would help my sister Improve the quality of her life. Getting a handicapped accessible vehicle would also assist with safely transporting my sister.  This type of vehicle can accommodate the powered wheelchair.   Having this vehicle would also allow my sister's caregiver to drive her to appointments, to the park, or even to the movies.  This would give her more flexibility to be able go get outside more often.

So I am using this gofundme to also raise funds to be able to purchase a vehicle for my sister, but also to pay for therapy, and the powerlift option on the wheelchair.  A description of the VMI Honda Pilot is at the link below

The vehicle is designed to accommodate powered wheelchair and comes with everything that's needed in a handicapped accessible vehicle.  The estimated cost of this vehicle is $60,000.

Sherene also need 24/7 personal care. She needs someone living in to be able to help her with personal care, bathroom and shower assistance, meal preparation, laundry assistance and help getting in and out of her bed. For the past 6 years her son who is now 16 years old have been helping her but he is involved with sports and will be leaving for college very soon.   He will be getting his drivers license soon and would be able to drive his mom to some of his basketball games.  This will help to improve her outlook on life and allow her to feel like she still have some positive options available to her during this difficult time in her life.

My sister is hopeful and is in need of your help at this time. Please consider supporting my sister's cause.  If you have any questions please feel free to ask. With your support, we anticipate she will improve and return to doing things such as conveniently getting to doctor's appointments, having a way to get to the grocery store and go to see her son play basketball and to also visit him in college in the near future. Updates will be provided to you so that you will be apart of her anticipated progress.  The funds will be needed with in the next 3 months or sooner.

Please help my sister to get what she needs to fight this medical condition and have a better quality of life.   If you are able to contribute anything or just share this page with others, it would be much appreciated.  Please be assured that your prayers and continued support are very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your support.
